Voltarol Back and Muscle Pain Relief Gel contains diclofenac diethylammonium, a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs are commonly used to relieve pain and inflammation.
How Does It Work?
Diclofenac works by blocking cyclo-oxygenase (COX), an enzyme involved in the production of prostaglandins—chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation in response to injury or certain conditions. By inhibiting the production of these chemicals, diclofenac effectively reduces pain and inflammation.
When applied topically, diclofenac is absorbed through the skin into the underlying tissues, where it reduces pain and inflammation in the targeted area.
Key Uses:
Voltarol Gel is available without a prescription and is effective for relieving local pain and inflammation caused by:
Muscle, joint, tendon, and ligament injuries (e.g., sprains, strains, and bruises)
Rheumatism
Caution and Warnings for Voltarol Back and Muscle Pain Relief Gel:
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes (e.g., mouth, nasal passages). If accidental contact occurs, rinse immediately with cold water.
Absorption: When applied to the skin, diclofenac is absorbed into the bloodstream at a much lower rate than oral diclofenac, which reduces the risk of side effects on the gut. However, people with a history of stomach or intestinal issues should be closely monitored by a doctor while using this medicine, especially the elderly.
Consult your doctor immediately if you experience side effects such as stomach pain, indigestion, heartburn, or signs of stomach or intestinal bleeding, such as blood in stools.
Large applications: Covering large areas with the gel increases absorption into the bloodstream, which can increase the risk of side effects. Do not use the gel more than four times a day.
Sun exposure: Avoid excessive exposure to bright sunlight while using this medicine, as it may increase the risk of sunburn.
If symptoms persist after seven days or worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine should not be used for longer than seven days unless advised by your doctor.
Use With Caution If:
You have a history of asthma or allergies.
You have a history of stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding.
Do Not Use If:
You are allergic to aspirin, NSAIDs, or any ingredients in this medicine.
You are under 12 years of age.
You are pregnant (especially in the third trimester) or breastfeeding without first consulting your doctor.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
Pregnancy: This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy. It should not be used in the third trimester due to risks such as delaying labor, increasing the length of labor, and complications for the newborn. It should only be used during the first and second trimesters if absolutely necessary and prescribed by a doctor. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding: Diclofenac passes into breast milk in small amounts. While it is unlikely to affect a nursing infant, the manufacturer advises against using diclofenac gel while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before use.
Potential Side Effects:
Skin irritation, itching, or redness.
Dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).
Photosensitivity (abnormal skin reaction to light, often a rash).
Allergic reactions: This may include bronchospasm (difficulty breathing), angioedema (swelling of lips, throat, or tongue), or severe skin reactions.
Other side effects could include:
Mild rashes, itching, or irritation at the application site.
Kidney issues, especially for those with a history of kidney disease.
Digestive problems, particularly for those with a history of stomach ulcers, such as stomach pain, heartburn, and indigestion.
If any of these side effects occur, stop using the product and consult your doctor immediately.
Interaction with Other Medicines:
No significant interactions have been reported between Voltarol pain-eze emulgel and other medicines when used topically on unbroken skin.
Avoid using this gel in combination with other diclofenac-containing products or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), as this could increase the risk of side effects.
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Voltarol gel with other medications, including over-the-counter and herbal products.
This medicine is for external use only.
Do not apply the gel to broken, diseased, or irritated skin, or to open wounds.
Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings (e.g., bandages), as this can increase absorption into the body and may heighten the risk of adverse effects.
Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the gel, unless the hands are the area being treated.
Gently rub the gel into the skin over the affected area. The diclofenac will be absorbed into the underlying tissues, providing targeted relief from pain and inflammation.
