What are threadworms?

Threadworms, also known as Enterobius vermicularis, are small white parasitic worms that inhabit the intestinal tract. They are about 0.5 inches in length and have a resemblance to white cotton threads, which is where they get their name.

How common are threadworms?

Threadworms are widespread, particularly among children. It is estimated that as many as 40% of children under the age of 10 in the UK may be affected at any given time. Additionally, once a child has threadworms, it is easy for the rest of the family to contract them as well.

How do threadworms spread?

Threadworms spread by producing a large number of tiny eggs that can't be seen with the naked eye. When these eggs are swallowed, they hatch into worms in the gut. The female threadworm lays her eggs around the anus at night, causing an itchy bottom. Scratching the itch can lead to further infections if the skin is broken and can also spread the eggs through finger and nail contact. They can also be spread through direct contact, food, towels, and bed linen. Threadworm eggs can also stick to clothing, carpets, and vegetables. They are easily swallowed because of their small size and widespread presence.

Are threadworms harmful?

Threadworms are not dangerous but they can be a nuisance. They can cause intense itching, which can be distressing and embarrassing for the sufferer. They can also cause sleep disturbance, stomach aches, irritable crying, loss of appetite or an excessive appetite. In rare cases, threadworms can also be transferred to the vagina and urinary tract resulting in vaginal irritation, discharge, cystitis symptoms or bedwetting.
