Xenical®

Xenical® is a prescription weight loss medication containing the active ingredient orlistat. It is designed to help obese individuals lose weight by reducing the absorption of dietary fat.

Xenical® works by inhibiting the enzyme lipase in the digestive system. This action prevents about 30% of the fat consumed in the diet from being absorbed, thus reducing calorie intake and promoting weight loss.

Xenical® is recommended for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have weight-related health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.

Take one 120 mg capsule three times a day with each main meal that contains fat. Swallow the capsule with water during or up to an hour after the meal. If you skip a meal or eat a meal without fat, you should skip the dose of Xenical®.

When combined with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and regular physical activity, Xenical® can help users lose about 5-10% of their body weight. Clinical studies have shown that Xenical® users lose significantly more weight than those using diet alone.

Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as oily stools, flatulence, frequent bowel movements, and abdominal discomfort. These side effects are typically mild and often decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Xenical® is not suitable for individuals with chronic malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis. Consult our pharmacist before starting Xenical®, especially if you have any existing medical conditions or are taking other medications. Severe liver injury has been reported in rare cases.

Xenical® can interact with certain medications, such as warfarin, cyclosporine, and medications for diabetes or thyroid conditions. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Yes, Xenical® should be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. This helps minimise side effects and enhances the effectiveness of the medication. It is also recommended to take a multivitamin at bedtime to ensure adequate nutrition, as Xenical® can reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
