Mounjaro price increase UK: what changed and your options

Eli Lilly raised UK Mounjaro prices. What changed, why, who's affected, and your options — staying on, adjusting dose, or switching to Wegovy — explained.

Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, raised its UK list prices — a change that affected private patients across every provider, since it applies to the medicine itself, not any one pharmacy. If you're weighing up what to do, you have more options than "pay more or stop": staying at your current dose, holding at a lower dose, or switching to Wegovy are all clinically legitimate paths. Here's the situation, plainly.

What actually changed

The increase came from the manufacturer, who said it was about aligning the UK's originally low launch price with other countries — not supply problems or pharmacy costs. Because it's a wholesale change, every legitimate UK provider was affected; differences you see between pharmacies reflect their service costs and margins, not access to cheaper stock. Three things did not change:

  • NHS pricing and access — patients receiving tirzepatide through the NHS are unaffected
  • Wegovy and other weight-loss treatments — the change applies to Mounjaro only
  • The medicine itself — same product, same doses, same manufacturer

Your options, honestly compared

1. Stay on your current dose

If Mounjaro is working and the new cost is manageable, continuity is worth a lot — you keep the mechanism your body has adjusted to and the results trajectory you're on.

2. Hold at a lower dose

Not everyone needs the top of the ladder. Many people maintain excellent results at mid-range doses, and holding rather than titrating up (or stepping down with prescriber approval) reduces monthly cost while keeping the treatment's core benefit. This is a clinical conversation, not just a budget one — response and tolerability lead the decision.

3. Switch to Wegovy

Wegovy (semaglutide) wasn't affected by the change and remains a highly effective medicine — around 15% average body-weight loss in its pivotal trial, plus a UK licence for cardiovascular risk reduction in eligible patients that Mounjaro doesn't hold. Switching means restarting at Wegovy's lowest dose and titrating up, since the two active ingredients aren't interchangeable. Our guide to switching between the two medicines covers what the transition feels like.

4. Pause medication

A legitimate option — but go in clear-eyed: appetite generally returns when treatment stops, and trial data shows partial regain is common without it. If you pause, the habits you've built are what protect your progress, and a planned taper conversation with your prescriber beats simply not reordering.

One thing not to do

Price pressure is exactly what unregulated sellers prey on. Mounjaro bought outside regulated pharmacies — social media sellers, "no prescription needed" websites, imported pens — carries real counterfeit and safety risk, and it's illegal to supply prescription medicines that way. Check any pharmacy on the GPhC register before buying; the price of a fake isn't a bargain.

How we handle it at YourMedicals

Every order is one-off — no subscription, no auto-renew — so a price change never silently rolls onto a recurring charge; you see the current price before every order you place. And every dose change or switch request is reviewed by our prescriber team, so whichever of the options above you lean toward, the decision is made with clinical input, not alone. Current prices for all doses are on our treatments and prices page.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Mounjaro get more expensive in the UK?

The manufacturer, Eli Lilly, raised UK list prices to align them with other countries after a comparatively low launch price. It affects all private providers; the NHS is unaffected.

Is Wegovy cheaper than Mounjaro now?

Wegovy wasn't part of this increase, so the gap between the two narrowed or reversed at many doses. Compare current prices per dose rather than headlines — and remember switching means restarting at Wegovy's lowest dose.

Can I drop to a lower Mounjaro dose to save money?

Possibly — dose reductions are a real clinical option and many people maintain results at mid-range doses. It needs prescriber approval, based on your response and history, not price alone.

Will the price go up again?

Nobody can promise either way — pricing is set by the manufacturer. What you can control: no-subscription ordering, so you reconsider at every purchase rather than being locked in.
