  • Nasal polyps
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers or a history of it
  • History of gastrointestinal bleeding related to use of NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s)
  • Rare hereditary problems of glucose-galactose malabsorption, galactose intolerance, or the Lapp lactase deficiency
  • About to undergo a major operation
  • The pain is severe and disturbs your sleep or causes you to wake up during the night
  • You are experiencing other symptoms alongside the pain such as fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss

Medication

  • Alpha blockers such as doxazosin, tamsulosin
  • Aminoglycosides such as gentamicin, neomycin or streptomycin
  • Anti-cancer treatment
  • Anticoagulants such as warfarin
  • Anti-depressants
  • Anti-platelet medications such as aspirin or clopidogrel
  • Any medication for heart problems
  • Cardiac glycosides such as digoxin
  • Colestyramine
  • Diuretics such as furosemide
  • Epilepsy treatments
  • Lithium
  • Medication used to suppress the immune system such as methotrexate, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, etc
  • Medicines for high blood pressure
  • Mifepristone
  • Oral corticosteroids
  • Other NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin), including similar medications such as celecoxib or etoricoxib
  • Probenecid
  • Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine or paroxetine
  • Sulfonamide medications such as sulfasalazine
  • Sulfonylureas such as gliclazide, glibenclamide, etc
  • Zidovudine, used to treat HIV
  • Quinolone antibiotics such as doxycycline, tetracycline, etc

Agreement

  • NSAID’s should always be taken with or after a meal in order to prevent or decrease the risk of gastro-intestinal side effects
  • You should not take/use different types of NSAIDs simultaneously, whether it is a topical (Ibuleve gel, Voltarol) or oral NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxen, mefenamic acid)
  • The pain does not improve or worsens with treatment
  • The pain spreads to new areas of the body
  • The pain is severe
  • The pain impacts your quality of life
  • Difficulty swallowing and unexplained weight loss
  • Vomiting blood or dark particles
  • Blood in your faeces, or black/tarry faeces
  • Severe indigestion, stomach pain, feeling or being sick
  • Signs of hypersensitivity such as skin rashes, blisters or peeling of skin, and difficulty breathing
  • You will read the patient information leaflet before using this medication
  • You are aged 18 years or over
  • You have answered all questions truthfully and accurately
  • If you have an NHS Summary Care digital record, our specialists can check it to ensure this medication is safe for you
  • You understand that we take your answers in good faith and any false or incorrect information given can be hazardous to your health
  • This treatment is solely for your own use
  • You will inform your GP that you have been prescribed this medication if this is appropriate
  • You will contact us and inform your GP if you experience any side effects with your treatment, you start any new medication/your medical conditions change during treatment
  • You are capable of making your own decision about your healthcare and have the capacity to do so
