Medical Conditions

  • Liver disease/tumours or history of it
  • Porphyria (an inherited blood disease)
  • Epilepsy
  • Asthma
  • Any cardiovascular (heart) problems such as high blood pressure, heart failure, arrythmias, angina
  • Renal (kidney) impairment or disease
  • Diabetes
  • Galactose intolerance, fructose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
  • History during pregnancy of idiopathic jaundice or an itchy rash known as pemphigoid gestationis
  • Migraine headaches
  • Untreated endometrial hyperplasia
  • Undiagnosed genital bleeding
  • Active or recent trophoblastic disease
  • Depression
  • Known, past or suspected breast or genital tract carcinoma
  • Severe itching
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • History of repeated miscarriage
  • Any current serious injuries or medical conditions which may require immediate hospitalisation

Medication

  • Anticonvulsants (e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine)
  • Antibiotics (e.g. rifampicin, rifabutin, nevirapine, efavirenz, tetracyclines such as doxycycline, ampicillin, oxacillin and co-trimoxazole)
  • Ritonavir/nelfinavir or other medications used for HIV
  • Aminoglutethimide (sometimes used for Cushing’s syndrome)
  • Ciclosporin
  • Griseofulvin
  • Selegiline
  • Tizanidine
  • Rifamycin
  • Anticoagulants such as warfarin, clopidogrel
  • St John’s wort
  • Any hormone replacement therapy or contraceptives, whether oral or as an implant
  • Anti-cancer medications
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen
  • Statins for high cholesterol (e.g. simvastatin, atorvastatin)
  • Anti-hypertensives (medication to treat high blood pressure)

Agreement

  • This medication should be started 3 days before the expected onset of menstruation. A normal period should occur 2-3 days after stopping this medication
  • Taking hormone medication such as norethisterone can slightly increase your risk of experiencing a blood clot. You should stay aware of the symptoms of blood clots and if you suspect you are having one, please seek medical help immediately
  • This medication does not act as a contraceptive when being used for period delay. You should use other contraceptive methods, such as using condoms
  • You will read the patient information leaflet before using this medication
  • You are aged 18 years or over
  • You have answered all questions truthfully and accurately
  • If you have an NHS Summary Care digital record, our specialists can check it to ensure this medication is safe for you
  • You understand that we take your answers in good faith and any false or incorrect information given can be hazardous to your health
  • This treatment is solely for your own use
  • You will inform your GP that you have been prescribed this medication if this is appropriate
  • You will contact us and inform your GP if you experience any side effects with your treatment, you start any new medication, or your medical conditions change during treatment
  • You are capable of making your own decision about your healthcare and have the capacity to do so
